چکیده

The ejected mass distribution of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) directly probes progenitor evolutionary history and explosionmechanisms, with implications for their use as cosmological probes. Although the Chandrasekhar mass is a natural mass scale for the explosion of white dwarfs as SNe Ia, models allowing SNe Ia to explode at other masses have attracted much recent attention. Using an empirical relation between the ejected mass and the light-curve width, we derive ejected masses Mej and 56Ni masses MNi for a sample of 337 SNe Ia with redshifts z < 0.7 used in recent cosmological analyses. We use hierarchical Bayesian inference to reconstruct the joint Mej–MNi distribution, accounting for measurement errors. The inferred marginal distribution of Mej has a long tail towards sub-Chandrasekhar masses, but cuts off sharply above 1.4M . Our results imply that 25–50 per cent of normal SNe Ia are inconsistent with Chandrasekhar-mass explosions, with almost all of these being sub-Chandrasekhar mass; super-Chandrasekhar-mass explosionsmake up nomore than 1 per cent of all spectroscopically normal SNe Ia. We interpret the SN Ia width–luminosity relation as an underlying relation between Mej and MNi, and show that the inferred relation is not naturally explained by the predictions of any single known explosion mechanism.

On the Progenitors of Super-chandrasekhar Mass Type Ia Supernovae

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can be used as the standard candlelight to determine the cosmological distances because they are thought to have a uniform fuel amount. Recent observations of several overluminous SNe Ia suggest that the white dwarf masses at supernova explosion may significantly exceed the canonical Chandrasekhar mass limit. These massive white dwarfs may be supported by rapid diffe...

Type Ia Supernovae from Sub-Chandrasekhar Mass White Dwarfs

We argue that detonations of sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs can lead to bright explosions with light curves and spectra similar to those of observed Type Ia supernovae. Given that binary systems containing accreting sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs should be common, this suggests that a non-negligible fraction of the observed Type Ia supernova rate may arise from sub-Chandrasekhar mass ...

Distribution of Ni Yields of Type Ia Supernovae and Implications for Progenitors

The amount of Ni produced in type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosion is probably the most important physical parameter underlying the observed correlation of SN Ia luminosities with their light curves. Based on an empirical relation between the Ni mass and the light curve parameter △m15, we obtained rough estimates of the Ni mass for a large sample of nearby SNe Ia with the aim of exploring the div...

Constraints on the progenitor systems of type Ia supernovae

UVOIR bolometric light curves provide a valuable insight into the nature of type Ia supernovae. We present an analysis of sixteen well-observed SNe Ia. Constraints are placed on several global parameters concerning the progenitor system, explosion mechanism and subsequent radiation transport. By fitting a radioactive decay energy deposition function to the quasiexponential phase (50 to 100 days...

Reconciling 56ni Production in Type Ia Supernovae with Double Degenerate Scenarios

Binary white dwarf (WD) coalescence driven by gravitational waves or collisions in triple systems are potential progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We combine the distribution of 56Ni inferred from observations of SNe Ia with the results of both sub-Chandrasekhar detonation models and direct collision calculations to estimate what mass WDs should be exploding in each scenario to reprodu...
